As competition is increasing, companies are not prepared to put up with systems that do not deliver business benefits and do not tolerate projects that fail to deliver expected benefits.
It has been found that a large number of large projects fail due to deficient requirements identification. As a consequence there is growing interest in business analysis function and associated role.
Role of Business Analyst (BA) has grown beyond System Analysts role in IT Department. BAs are looked at to identify key business needs in both projects and initiatives. They play important role in defining the strategic path. BAs are not confined to just IT department. They
- identifies business problems and opportunities
- elicits, validates and documents requirements for changes to business processes
- recommends solutions to business help achieve their goal
This course is designed for business analysts, systems analysts, or any other project team member involved with requirements.
This course would also be appropriate for individuals who manage business analysts or those who work with the business requirements document and need a more in-depth understanding of the process and documentation
In this course students will learn:
- Scope the business area of analysis by utilizing the project charter to further identify the level and complexity of the business analysis effort.
- Support requirements and change management by identifying areas of impact. • Elicit critical requirements using various tools and techniques.
- Analyze and structure requirements.
- Ask the right questions through the use of interviewing templates developed specifically for business analysis.
- Identify five core components necessary to complete a requirements package. • Recognize and document “excellent” requirements.
- Plan an approach for documenting, categorizing, and packaging requirements.
- Identify which techniques and documentation options are appropriate for each methodology and project type (COTS, maintenance, business process improvement, new development, etc).
- Verify that requirements are testable and generate testing objectives.
- Conduct an effective requirements review to improve the quality of the requirements package.
- Use elicitation techniques to facilitate requirements gathering and work toward consensus.

Dr N K Mehta has worked in senior management positions in well known IT services companies including Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) the largest and the best known company from India. He was one of the few Indians to have been selected for the role of International Delivery Unit Director in Xansa – a British company where he was also later chosen for the role of Global CIO.
Recognised by his colleagues for bringing about positive changes in his environment, Dr. Mehta has led many initiatives – technical, techno-commercial and service innovations all through his career, many of these were among first time in the organisations he worked. He modified SSAD approach to incorporate prototyping phase in a large scale organisation wide consultancy assignment. This real-life experience was selected for Kewal Dubey award by the Computer Society of India.
He was very closely involved in end to end design and implementation of a distributed application on Oil Trading for the largest Soya Processor in India. This saw introduction of VSAT for data communication in the company (1996-7).
He introduced innovations in the form of shared service centre for servicing multiple customers and virtual teams across geographies for servicing internal customers on IT infrastructure. He defined a new career family for business systems professionals at Xansa.
He has led software (export) delivery centres through various process maturity phases that led to certifications of highest levels in software engineering, workforce practices and information security (i.e. CMM, P-CMM, BS7799). He guided modification of work force practices for professional services and ODCs (offshore development centres) for Level 5 capability demonstration at NTL. He was instrumental in setting up new office premises – state of art development centres for reliable offshore IT services.
He was associated with the training in PC concepts of first few batches of senior bureaucrats of Indian Government (1986-7). This was recognised with the Excellence Award of TCS. His short stint in academics (at NITIE) saw reorientation of a course on Design of Information Systems. The experience was shared in a publication of CSI. He has promoted Industry and Academics participation. Today, he has taken initiative to set up a Centre of Excellence in Open Software for increasing affordability of IT solutions among academic institutions and SMEs.
Dr. Mehta has substantial experience in all facets of Information Technology business with international and domestic stint. His wide experience spans private and public sectors, in various roles, covering management, consultancy, research and education & training.
