Abstract:

“These are tough times for all of us.”
“Budget cuts are on the cards.”
“For us to award new contracts, you need to demonstrate value.”

Sounds very familiar! Doesn’t it?

These are the words of our clients which we now hear day in and day out. Enough reason for us to think over. Even for clients with long standing business relationship, the good old work no more holds good. Lean and Mean is the order of the day. Value in terms of being Lean and Mean is being increasingly defined by - Achieving ‘Same With Less’ or ‘More With Same’- to demonstrate ‘Project Transformation’ to clients.

But the lingering question for a client with large complex projects with varying technologies and stages of the project life cycle is - ‘How Do I Measure Value Being Delivered’. The typical and easy way out to demonstrate value is by reducing resource count or increasing work hours. As a Project Manager, however, one needs to ensure that value measures should not be at the cost of the project team members.

This paper tries to address this perspective by providing a ‘Value Analysis Framework’ for ‘Transforming’ projects by identification of value and non value added activities in a project. By bringing down the non-value added activities (thereby enhancing savings in cost/time and improved quality) one can hope to achieve the objectives of being lean and mean. Last but not the least, this framework provides a means to enable repeat and new business and raking in the much wanted revenue in the current times.
