Information technology and software projects and service delivery continues to evolve and mature as it encounters the newer and harder challenges each passing day. The ever increasing competition for business to save that one more dollar of cost has propelled the internet revolution and virtualization has wrought a new shape to the world as Tom Friedman described in his book, “The world is flat.” The dynamics of projects particularly the IT and Software developments have become more complicated than ever before and terms like global distributed delivery, global teaming, offshore, rightshore delivery are getting coined and invented almost regularly as potential strategies to address them.

From the SEI CMMi perspective it can be said that the standards are the glue that hold firmly the “people-process-technology” triad. Distributed delivery has added multiple dimensions to each of these “people” , “process” and “technology” which necessitated SEI to upgrade CMM to CMMi with “i” signifying integration. So which ever way we look at one thing that stands out as key is the importance of working in synergy with diverse set of people, technology and processes. Hence the undisputed new mantra of successful project management is collaboration — collaboration with all entities right from project conceptualization to transition. The key objective of any project is the satisfaction of the stakeholder needs. The needs start getting detailed out and taking shape in the initial phase of the project because the cost for the change is lowest in this phase of the project as evident from this picture. The initial or inception phase of any project is when most of the planning takes place and the actual delivery of the project depend on the perfection, accuracy and level of details in the planning. Hence it is quite logical that collaboration is most significant in the planning phase of a project.
