Technology & Mindset Change for Global Project Management

Lakshmi Narayanan

More and more business is strongly influenced by globalization of markets, access to global labor forces, outsourcing of systems and services, and complex networks of design, development, manufacturing and distribution. The traditional view of project management is being challenged because of changes happening continuously in the business environment. These changes are related to mergers and acquisitions, integration of managerial and business process, seamless utilization of global resources and project management cutting across geographies and cultural barriers. Increasingly we are observing some new challenges like a 24 by 7 service expectation, expectations set by competition and other industries and a “no excuses only results world”.

The above challenges make it pertinent to focus all our energy on successful global project management. There are several factors that influence the outcome like shared responsibility for project completion, collaboration across time zones, centralized resource allocation and balancing, truly implementing a global development business models and accountability without authority.

The key to success in global project management lies in newer integrated approach from technology and people change management perspective. Only technology can provide the tools to tackle the new global project management and to deploy technology and gain a competitive advantage there needs to be an innovative mindset change.

Technology Change Management
Technology adoption to support global project management involves creating a global delivery platform for work execution, collaboration and knowledge management. The objective of using technology support for successful global project management is:

  • Usage of collaborative and transparent platform to achieve consistency in global delivery
  • Usage of process enactment and guidance to achieve delivery excellence consistently
  • Usage of customized process engineering and integrated lifecycle platform to achieve empowered team

People Change Management:
Enhancing managerial capabilities by increased focus on accountability and delegation. Achieving mindset change that makes everyone in the team feel that they are being supported to succeed. People management has both traditional and modern flavor. The traditional approach is to fix accountability with the leader even though the team is distributed across the geography. This helps in achieving the results by leveraging the skill set and competencies of teams in executing their tasks. The leader orchestrates the distributed team and facilitates in achieving success. The modern approach to overcome the challenge of global project management is to fine tune the delegation. In an increasingly interconnected and interdependent global economy, organizations must adapt and individuals must reinvent themselves every so often to remain competitive.

While adopting new technology to support global project management is relatively easy to achieve by focused attention on innovation and investments, enhancing managerial capabilities and achieving mindset change which involves people practices are more difficult to achieve. The present generation of young managers are well equipped to manage compared to previous generation thanks to technology and learning organizations.
