Software development faces lot of challenges in delivering on time, within budget and consistent product quality. The reason for these challenges could be that projects do not monitor and control effectively the performance of software life cycle and project management activities. They are not able to predict the project performance and proactively take actions to avoid the undesirable performance.

Quantitative project management provides proactive insight into the operation of an organization based on data and statistical analysis. The objective here is to understand the past, control the present and predict the future. Additionally quantitative project management should help achieve the business objectives by monitoring the process and sub process performance.

While there is no magic wand, it is a progressive approach to inculcate metrics based management culture, stabilize the process and improve the processes to make it more capable.

The granularity at which projects are managed using metrics gives enough controls to meet the business objectives consistently. Also the success to which the ongoing process and technology improvements are aligned with metrics helps to improve organization capability and achieve sustainable competitive edge.

“Demystifying Quantitative Project Management” attempts to understand basic measures and metrics, relationships between them and simple methodologies that can be used to interpret the data and manage the project more effectively.
